We are delighted to welcome Dr. Ashton Egan, a distinguished researcher from Ohio State University, as a Humboldt Research Fellow. Dr. Ashton Egan brings a wealth of expertise in nickel and cobalt-based superalloys, and electron microscopy. He joins us from The Ohio State University and the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS).

During his fellowship, Dr. Egan will collaborate with the Chair of General Materials Properties (WW1) and High-Temperature Research Group, led by Prof. Dr. Mathias Göken and Dr.-Ing. Steffen Neumeier and the Institute of Micro- and Nanostructure Research (IMN, WW9) led by Prof. Dr. Erdmann Spiecker. His research period at the Faculty of Engineering spans from May 1, 2024, to May 1, 2026.

Dr. Egan’s research will focus on the high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HRSTEM) imaging of localized phase transformations in Nickel-based superalloys. He aims to design and characterize new cobalt-based superalloys for high-temperature applications, such as turbine engines. By leveraging local phase transformation strengthening, Dr. Egan’s work seeks to enhance the operating temperature range of these alloys, potentially leading to more sustainable turbine engines with reduced fuel consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions.

In explaining his choice of FAU, Dr. Egan highlighted the university’s strong history in alloy development and superalloy characterization, which aligns with his research interests. He also praised the exceptional infrastructure and world-class facilities at CENEM, which support advanced electron microscopy and high-temperature research.

We warmly welcome Dr. Ashton Egan to our community and look forward to the groundbreaking research and collaboration that will emerge from his time with us at IMN/CENEM.
